  1. I think there's a smaller secondary stress on latter parts of compound words in Finnish. Also, over three syllable long words have a secondary stress on every other syllable.

    Puna is not a contraction of punainen (=red), but means more like redness, the character or quality of red. Therefore punainen (=red) means sort of like "has redness". I can't think of an example with red, but it's the same with sini and sininen. Thus "taivaan sini" means "the blue of sky", when you're not, strictly speaking, referring to a color blue in a tangible sense but the idea of blueness.
